Expanding The World Of Battlestar Galactica Characters

By Willard Y. Wuckert

Battlestar Galactica is one of the most well-known and most successful science fiction franchises that keeps gaining fans even today. The complete universe of this sci-fi storyline began in 1978, but since then it has expanded dramatically to include several different television series, novels, comic books, and even video games. Fans in many parts of the world are enjoying these different adaptations and extensions of the original story and characters because it allows them a chance to truly experience the world of Galactica. A few of the characters have been through more changes than others as the franchise has been altered during the years, but the core concepts of the original story have been preserved and cherished throughout BGS history.

Glen Larson was the creator behind both the original series that ran for one season in 1978 as well as the brief sequel released in 1980 which contained a few of the original characters. The basic ideas of the TV show's plot were that a race of humans from a distance galaxy were being attacked by the Cylons, a race of cybernetic creatures. Despite the fact that the original series was only one season in length, that brief season was enough to draw in devoted fans who were so upset at the cancellation that they protested at the TV studio's headquarters.

In 2003 the decision was made to reboot the TV show by means of a three hour miniseries which later was developed into a regular series on air from 2004 to 2009. This was a re-imagining of the first series so it featured the identical basic characters with some notable updates to make them feel more realistic for modern viewers. Because it continued for several seasons, the creators were able to spend more time developing story arcs for individual characters and for the series as a whole.

The story of Battlestar Galactica and its characters did not go to rest with the final episode in 2009 since spin off series were already in the works. The TV series Caprica was a prequel to BGS and allowed viewers to get a clearer idea of the events which triggered the storyline beginning in the first episode in 2004.

Fans of the Battlestar Galactica series continue to like all of the different adaptations of these characters stories that they can find. Video game fans who also appreciate the series can enjoy online games that allow you to interact with the popular characters while enjoying a well-designed MMO game.
