Give Your Xbox 360 A Long Life With These Four Simple Tips

By Dan Strong

If you are the owner of a new Xbox, setting it up so that you can use it is probably the only thing on your mind. It is human nature not to be troubled by upkeep and maintenance until it is too late.

However, if you hope to avoid the red ring of death and overheating issues, maintenance and proper usage is important. The Xbox is a complicated and sometimes difficult machine that demands your care. Keep your Xbox in good health by using the following four tips:

1.) The number one enemy is heat.

The components on the motherboard were not designed to operate in extreme heat. This heat also compromises and weakens the solder joint connections on the motherboard.

Always locate your Xbox in an open and cool area. Failure to do this will overtax the console's cooling system and will cause overheating.

Limit the gaming time to no more than one or two hours. Let the console idle for twenty minutes before turning it off. This will minimize any residual heat left over after the fans shut down.

2.) Dust accumulation inside the console is just as destructive as excessive heat.

Dust reduces the amount of cool air intake by the fans. Because dust is an insulator, it prevents the internal electronics from dissipating heat. As a result of this insulating blanket of dust, overheating occurs.

3.) Exposure to cigarette smoke is unhealthy for your Xbox.

The tars in the smoke adhere to the surfaces of the internal components. Dust then sticks more easily to the mother board components because of the tar. This bonding prevents easy removal of internal dust. This dust blanket entraps heat.

4.) Beware of externally mounted cooling fans.

There is no shortage of models and makes of these types of fans. Some of these fans actually work well while others don't. However, Microsoft does not endorse any of them.

If you choose the wrong fan, it will cause more harm than good and it will void your warranty. Always read the customer reviews on the product before purchasing. If your console doesn't overheat, then purchasing one of these fans is unnecessary.

As was mentioned previously, the Xbox 360 is a powerful, yet delicate device. Some care and maintenance will go a long to extending it's useful life.
