Selecting Your Favorite Sci-Fi MMO

By Nathan R. Robel

The design groups that make sci-fi MMO games, also called massively multiplayer online games, do not limit themselves to making these games to fit just one single genre. There is a considerable amount of competition amongst video game designers because the advent of online gaming has opened an international market. Science fiction based games have been made since the starting days of video games but that does not indicate that all the good design ideas have already been taken. For game makers to create a true "hit" game that will be cherished by players they have to develop high quality games in the most popular genres.

Sci-fi MMO games are often designed in the common style of RPG's, or role playing games. RPG's encourage players to focus their attention on every detail of their character's development, from improving their strength and abilities to collecting useful items. The massively multiplayer aspects of an MMORPG come to the fore when the missions you receive in the game are extremely difficult and cannot be completed unless you have the support of a team of other players.

Sci-fi MMO shooter games are also quite popular because they use futuristic weapons, tense visual and audio cues, and dramatic camera angles to make an awesome gaming experience. First person shooters, which allow you to view the game's world as if you were really the character, can be quite intense and force you to battle enemies face to face. In such games it is important that you collect a variety of different weapons so that you are ready to face any foes that may appear in your way; you will also need sufficient ammo in order to gain victory in battle.

A growing number of video games are being made, not in a specific genre, but rather as mixed genre games that incorporate elements of many different types of popular video games. First person shooters may stay true to many of their basic genre elements while also adding challenging puzzles that are more commonly found in platform games. Many games register your character's progress by using experience points and a leveling method; both are borrowed from RPG's.

If you want to have the thrill of fighting against alien enemies in the far reaches of deep space, you can find it by playing well-designed sci-fi MMO games. Modern MMO designers have made many excellent games that incorporate details from lots of popular genres; they are certain to appeal to all gamers.
