Hilarie Cash Ph.D. who is CoFounder of an Internet Addiction Recovery Program in Washington State called reSTART and Steven Cessario, who is the founder of Connecticut Youth Mentoring and Coaching, discussed with Lon Woodbury, host of the Struggling Teens L.A. Talk Radio Show, about the negative and positive impact of computer system games on children and teenagers.

Exactly what Impact Does Computer Gaming Have On Young People?

Throughout the interview, Lon asked his visitors to throw light on the topic of computer system gaming. He wanted to know how gaming influenced young individuals. He asked his guest about the views they held about computer gaming.

Steven Cessario, whose role was to show the bright side of pc games, mentioned that a study by the Pew Research Center concluded that computer games, far from being socially isolating, serve to link young people with their peers and to their culture. He also noted that various other studies has also qualitatively documented, the many methods that video games improve social interactions and relationships. Adolescents make friends with other gamers, both in person and online. They discuss their games with one another, share useful techniques, and frequently play together.

Hilarie Cash, whose role was to point out the darker side of computer gaming, pointed out that excessive video games were often shown to be socially isolating, thus reducing opportunities for outdoor activities, which in turn could lead to obesity and poor physical health. In addition, there was some research to suggest that in less emotionally balanced kids, it did promote a tendency for violence if the games have violent content. Those who were not tempted to enact out violent urges did show a narcissistic tendency to be antisocial. They appeared to have become insensitive, lacking empathy and compassion for the suffering of other people.

Final Thoughts

As might be anticipated, there was no final resolution in this friendly argument as both guests marshaled sensible arguments and mentioned research to support their perspective. However, toward the end, both guests concurred that small amounts of gaming was the best policy due to the fact that many of the undesirable addictive qualities occurred when time spent on computer system games became excessive.
