Sony PS3: Is It An Excellent Gaming Console Or Not?

By Rasphald Belownski

The PlayStation 3 is the third gaming system made by Sony Computer Entertainment in their PlayStation series. It is included in the seventh generation of video game consoles alongside Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. It was released back in 2006 and has since become very popular among game enthusiasts.

The PlayStation 3 is an excellent entertainment machine. It is not anymore merely a gaming console, it could also accommodate hi-def movies and digital TV, store pictures and also music, and even make it possible for their users to go online. The impressive power of the PS3 comes from its CPU that is comprised of one 3.2 GHz Power Processing Element or PPE and eight Synergistic Processing Elements or SPEs. Because of its multiple core architecture, the system can delegate each core to a certain task.

This allows highly effective multitasking capability, and better gaming experience. It also features a dedicated graphics processing unit which can output resolutions up to 1080p HD. As opposed to other video game consoles, the PS3 can handle Blu-ray discs, and is possibly one reason why a number of people seem to prefer this sort of console. Adding to the appeal of the PS3 are the gaming titles that are only playable on the said unit such as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy. Furthermore, the PlayStation community receives a great amount of third party support, meaning, you can get more games and accessories for the PS3 than the other video game consoles.

Then again, the PS3 is not perfect. One reason which makes buyers think twice about getting a PS3 is the price - the least expensive model will set you back $249 in most retail stores. When it was first released, it was also the largest among the three video game consoles from the 7th generation. Sony has introduced a PS3 slim to take care of this problem though, but that also led to dropping some features, most notably, the ability to run third party OS. The much mentioned PS3 Yellow Light of Death is also another reason why consumers are hesitant about getting this system.

Basically what happens is that some owners of the original PS3 experience a fault indicator - a yellow flashing light, which manifests due to a non-specific hardware failure that makes the machine unplayable . The Yellow light on ps3 is not as apparent in the newer models though, and many of those who own the older models have found a way to resolve the issue by returning their machines to Sony. Some PS3 gamers, specifically those whose machines are no longer covered by warranty, even did the repair themselves and have been successful.
