Recognizing Terms Related To Space MMO Culture

By Aaliyah I. Herzog

Space MMO games are growing in popularity together with many other massively multiplayer online role playing games and have started to create their own unique culture. MMORPG's currently represent a notable chunk of the global gaming market, accounting for millions of dollars in sales and month subscriptions. The developers that dedicate themselves to make and manage these games have to constantly stay on top of changes in the game since the game's servers are constantly running and players can log into the game 24 hours a day from distinct parts of the world. Since these games are extremely different from console based RPG's that are made just for one player, a culture has developed online with its own terminology related to MMORPG's.

Gamers could easily be distracted away from a popular space MMO game if its content were to suddenly become dull, too predictable, or just overly cyclical; constant changes must be made. Buffing and nerfing are two MMORPG expressions that are typical in the online gaming world and refer to the way game designers tweak the character roles in the game to update the game play. Buffing indicates that the stats of that class is improved, perhaps by changes that developers make to the characters' skills and abilities. Though some classes are buffed, others are nerfed in that their skill sets are limited and some of their advantages are taken away through changes to the game.

The considerable portion of space MMO games feature progression systems, such as leveling up, that allow player to keep track of their progress in the game. You can move your character to an advanced level through a practice called grinding, which is basically the act of defeating one enemy after another until you reach a desired level. Nearly all online role playing games demand that players invest a bit of time into grinding their character if they hope to reach the highest levels, also known as endgame levels.

Of course, no online game would be complete without the social element of an in-game chat interface that lets you talk to other players. The chat system is a realm where gaming culture can clearly be seen since there are always abbreviated ways of discussing items, quests, and other in-game topics.

Because space MMO games form communities of gamers, it is only natural that they create their own culture as well. As you become increasingly acquainted with new online games, you are sure to form a part of these growing cultures as well.
